Weekly Rundown – 16 Weeks

It has been so long since I have posted a weekly rundown, and that makes sense because I haven’t been training for anything other than growing a small human.

Even though I am not training for any big exciting events it’s still fun to hold myself accountable to stay as fit and healthy as possible while pregnant. I am already drooling over fall 2018 registrations…

———–

Monday:  Early morning treadmill interval run. Afternoon swim class with Cannon, admittedly there wasn’t much exercise for me really but I got in the pool so it counts!

Tuesday: Body Pump (full body strength training class) and afternoon 30 minute run/walk with the stroller.

Wednesday: Early morning 30 minute treadmill run and swim class.

Thursday: 2 mile afternoon walk/jog and Bodypump

Friday: Quick treadmill run during nap time.

Saturday: Short afternoon jog.

Sunday: We went out for a 3 mile family hike in Boulder, the weather was beautiful and we had a great time

Totals:

Not really keeping track of millage since I don’t want to compare it to pre-pregnancy miles and feel bad. I am happy to just be moving and trying to gain some strength.

Happy Running Everyone!

Bumpdate – Weeks 14-16

Baby is now the size of: Started as a peach and is now the size  avocado, 4.5 inches long.

[Source]

Sleep: Sleeping is still better than the first trimester. I have had vivid dreams, that are really weird. I am trying to enjoy as much sleep as possible now. If this pregnancy is anything like my first, third trimester sleep is the worst!

Maternity clothes / preferred attire: I feel like I will be giving up the fight soon. I am still wearing mostly normal clothing but my selection of clothes that fit is shrinking by the day. Everyday when I think about getting dressed it feels like a game of what is going to still fit. I think I am going to need to bust out the old maternity clothes soon.

Symptoms: My symptoms haven’t been too bad lately. I am still so tired, especially in the afternoon. I keep reading about how women experience a burst of energy in the second trimester….I am still waiting for that to happen. I have some heartburn but it seems to be manageable still.

I have also been have intense headaches in the afternoons, not everyday but most.

Cravings, aversions and favorite foods: I am so glad that food has returned back mostly to normal. I am craving sandwiches all the time and feel hungrier than normal.

Exercise: Still running everyday (even if it’s just a mile or two) getting ready for our family turkey trot.

I am also doing Body Pump twice a week but I would like to add some more strength training, I am thinking of taking up 21 day fix again.

Mood: Pretty good, but feeling ready for a break, I am looking forward to winter break.

Missing: Training for big events, I have found myself looking at late 2018/2019 races and thinking of what will be next

Best moments: A few of the best moments were finding out the sex of the baby, and getting to hear the heartbeat again at the 16 week appointment.

Not directly attributed to pregnancy but celebrating Halloween with Cannon was SO much fun!

I’ll eat you up I love you so much

Buying: I made Cory head down to IKEA (not his favorite) but I wanted to pick up the dresser I had picked out for the new nursery.

Dreaming About: Races after the baby is born, winter break, Thanksgiving food and decorating the nursery.

North Fork 50k Race Report

I ran the North Fork 50k in Pine, Colorado back in June and I waned to be sure to get some thoughts down about the race. I always love reading race reports when I sign up for a new race.

North Fork 50k, Ultra Marathon

[Source]

This race is just 40 miles Southwest of Denver but feels very remote in the mountains. It’s completely on beautiful trails in Pine Valley Ranch Park. I LOVED this race, SO SO SO much. The trails were stunning, the terrain was challenging but well work it. While there was lots of climbing and descending it didn’t feel ridiculous.

North Fork 50k, Ultramarathon

[Source]

I did take the time to check out the course a couple weeks before the race so I would have some idea of what I was getting into, most photos are from this training run as I didn’t take the time to snap photos on race day.

North Fork 50k, Ultra Marathon

View of the park from the parking lot

Race morning is easy, with the usual ultra marathon laid back atmosphere. I decided to pick up my packet race morning since Pine is about a 90 minute drive from home and I didn’t want to drive that more than needed. I arrived about an hour before the race start, parking was easy and packet pick-up was simple.

Quickly it was go time, we all lined up behind the start line and started on a dirt road along Pine Lake.

The course quickly turns south and starts to climb on single track.

Some of the course is very forested and other parts are fairly open, keeping things interesting.

The course is fairly spectator friendly, there are many spots where family and friends to drive to, to see their racers. We decided it would be too long of a day for Cannon to be out for the entire time. So Cory brought Cannon down later, I got to see the around mile 22 and at the finish. I looked forward to seeing them SO much.

Ultra Marathon, 50k, North Fork

The last few miles of the course are all down hill, originally I was looking forward to “cruising” into the finish. But on race day those were some super painful miles! My legs were shot and I would have traded the down hill for a climb.

The finish line was amazing, I was excited to be done and join the party. There was great food, fun and some friends to hang out with. The BEST part was getting to pick up and cross the finish line with Cannon.

Instead of medals they gave out hand made bowls, I thought it was a great touch!

Overall I give this race a A+, I loved it so much. I would highly recommend it to anyone, I hope to run it again and maybe the 50 mile in the future.

Bumpdate: Weeks 1-13

Now that the secret is out, I thought it was time to recap the first few months of my pregnancy. If we take it back to the begining it really all started with a broken toe. Cory and I knew we wanted to try for a second baby sometime soon given our advanced age. The original plan was to wait until at least my training cycle was over and to start thinking about it in the fall. After I broke my toe in July, Cory suggested we move up the timeline as I couldn’t train for an ultra at that time and Leadville was off the table. Getting pregnant can take a while so I was fine with moving the timeline up, I really assumed I would still have time to train in the fall. But as luck would have it, we found out early August that we would be expecting a baby.

Surprise! No fall ultra training for me, just growing a bebe.

Baby was the size of: Started off the size of a poppy seed and grew to a lemmon.

Sleep: Sleep started to get difficult around week 5, I am not sure if it’s the ranging hormones or what but I was so restless and didn’t sleep more than a few hours at a time. Also the multiple trips to the bathroom a night didn’t help! Clearly this led to being S000000000 tired. Once I hit week 12 sleep started to get better, once in a while I actually sleep through the night.

Maternity clothes / preferred attire: No maternity clothes yet, but the early bloat was real, I felt like I was 5 months pregnant. I did gravitate to my looser, more comfortable clothes. I would wear my high waisted yoga pants all the time if I could.

Symptoms:  Symptoms could be described as UGH, around week 5 the usual first trimester symptoms started to set in. My complaints this time around are very similar to how I felt when I was pregnant with Cannon. I had mild nausea all day, that intensified if I tried to do to much or got tired. I had some dizziness and shortness of breath.

I also had intense tiredness, especially in the late afternoons. There were days that I longed for the days when I was pregnant with Cannon. Back then I could just come home and crash on the couch for the rest of the evening. But I know my days of Cannon being my only baby are numbered and I am trying to soak up as much time with him as I can.

Cravings, aversions and favorite foods:  GIVE ME ALL THE SIMPLE CARBS! for weeks 5-11 all I could really stomach were really plain foods mostly in the form of carbs. I tried my best to eat a healthy balanced diet but the thought of certain foods (fish, most vegetables, anything with a strong taste, etc) would have me turning green and wanting to die. I really craved sandwiches, granola, cheese and fruit. The though of eating was never fun but I needed to eat fairly often or I would feel even worse. Around week 12, I started to feel a little better and could start to stomach normal foods again. There are still moments of strong aversions and nausea but so much better.

Exercise: When I was pregnant with Cannon I was diagnosed with Placenta Previa, my doctor ordered me modified rest. I could go to work, but I was supposed to stay chained to my desk, stay off my feet as much as possible. I was also ordered not to exercise at all, not even walking more than needed to get around. Luckily this time (so far) I haven’t had any issues and have been able to continue to exercise. Nothing to intense, the furthest I have run was a 10k in September and I am just fine with that. I am focusing on staying healthy and keeping this little baby healthy as well. I have also been focusing.  on strength training by going to Body Pump a few times a week. I lost a lot of strength last time with my restrictions, I think that made my recovery extra difficult, I am doing everything I can to change that this time.

Mood: My mood has been nothing but a roller coaster. The first emotions were nothing but excitement, I was thrilled to think about adding another little one to our family and especially for Cannon to have a sibling. But the first trimester is a scary time, I feel like all you can do is wait and hope. Getting past week 12 is a huge relief, things can still happen but it feels a lot less scary.

Missing: Running long distances, feeling normal, sleep and wine. I don’t drink much normally but when I can’t have something at all, it always makes me want it more.

Best moments: Hands down the best three moments so far were the moment the pregnancy test turned positive.  The first time we got to see our little baby on the ultrasound at 8 weeks and getting to see the little heart beating away.

And seeing the baby again at week 12 ( we paid to have a private ultrasound so I could see our little babe again. Cannon LOVED hearing the baby’s heartbeat.

Worst moments: Around week 11 I got some scary test results, I had to see a specialists and get more tests. Those tests also came back marginal and concerning, so that led to more test that eventually came back all clear. No one can explain why the original tests came back abnormal. It was a very stressful couple of weeks. These concerning tests with no explanation was the reason we went in for the private ultrasound  at 12 weeks, my OB doesn’t do an ultrasound at 12 weeks and I really needed to see my sweet babe after such scary weeks.

Buying: Normally I wouldn’t make too many big purchases so early in a pregnancy but a crib that I had my eye on went on sale so we snapped it up. I am very excited to set up the nursery. I already have a Pinterest board full of ideas.

Dreaming About: Second trimester comfort, decorating the nursery and holding my sweet babe.

Cannon // 12 Month Check In

This update is very late (yikes) but I wanted to be sure to take note of the last month before Cannon turned one!

Baby Boy, 12 Months

Cannon is now 21 lbs 2 oz (47%) and 30.5 in (76%)

We started out the month with lots of hiking and being up in the mountains as much as possible. Cannon seems to really enjoy the hiking pack.

We are just so happy that Cannon is a happy little guy, he enjoys life and rolls with the punches.

We spent a lot of timing running together with the BoB stroller

And playing in the pool.

At the end of the month we spent a lot of time prepping for Cannon’s big birthday party

we had the BEST time celebrating out little mans big day!!!

Desert Rats Trail Marathon – Trail Running Festival Race Report

In April I ran my first marathon since having Cannon. I worked hard and got on as many trails as possible during the winter months in Boulder. When searching for an early season trail race Desert Rats Trail Marathon seemed like a good fit. I came in feeling ready for the distance but I was a little fearful of the hills and the heat.

We packed up the car, with what seemed like everything we own (9 months old need a lot when traveling!)  on Friday morning and started heading west to Fruita, Colorado.

Fruita is a really cute small town with a big focus on mountain biking, it reminded me a lot of Moab. We rolled into Fruita in the late afternoon and checked into our hotel. We stayed at the Fruita Comfort Inn which was everything we needed for a place to crash before a race and was really affordable. I particularly liked that the room had a microwave and a refrigerator, this was great for traveling with a baby.  Cannon was stoked on the king sized bed.

After checking in we headed to packet pick-up at the Fruita Community Center. In true trail race form packet pick-up was low-key and easy to get in and out of. After we had my shirt and bib we went to The Hot Tomato for pre-race pizza. The Hot Tomato was really cute but it was standing room only on a Friday evening so we put in our order and took Cannon back to the hotel so we could relax and get his dinner. We ate in our hotel room, got Cannon ready for bed and all turned in early.

Race morning was really easy, the trail head was just 15 minutes outside of town with plenty of parking. We got to the start line before the sun was up.

The start was nice and low key with plenty of bathrooms which is key to a successful race start! The race director reminded us to carry  water as the aid stations were 5-7 miles apart. The marathon and 50k started together, there was only about 70 runners in each race so the start was easy to navigate and find your pace group. You also run the first 2 miles on a jeep road before turning onto single track so there was no worry of getting caught in the wrong place in a conga line. The first climb was pretty long but afforded us a great view at the top.

The course was beautiful and kept us entertained with views and varying terrain.

Lots of smooth single track and rocky technical sections.

[Source] – Race photos were free with entry!

There is over 3000 feet of climbing and basically no flat sections to this course so if you are looking for a fast time, this race is not for you.

My favorite part of the course was where you run along the edge of a cliff above the river.

Then you get to run along the ridge above and see where you just were.

I took my time on the course, for me this was not about setting a PR, the course was difficult and it was hot!!! I just wanted to have fun so I did just that and took lots of pictures along the way.

My least favorite part of the race came right at the end, there is a really steep long climb along the highway on a jeep road, it’s not as pretty as the rest of the course. I was also cooked and ready to be done. Running in 70-80 degree heat after training all winter is a shock to the system.

The finish was fun, with lots of good food, Gemini Events knows we want more than a stale bagel and half a banana. They had the grills going and everyone was having a party.

I was tired and SO SO SO happy to be reunited with my boys.

Finisher medals were dog tags, nice little reminder of the race. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone looking for an early season trail race. They have the marathon and 50k on Saturday and a 10k or half marathon on Sunday.

Cannon // 10 Month Check In

Double Digits! Cannon is now 10 months old, and the coolest little dude.

Cannon is really growing into his personality and seems so much more like a little boy than baby already!

This month’s big development would be figuring out how to crawl. Cannon had been practicing for a while but this month he really became an expert and can get around like a pro. He also loves nothing more than to stand up and cruise around, getting ready to walk.

We had a lot to celebrate this month and Cannon loves nothing more than to be around lots of people and out doing things. Early in the moth we celebrated his Grammy’s birthday.

And enjoyed Grandma sneaking him a bite of cupcake

We took a fun weekend trip to Fruita Colorado so I could run the Desert Rates Marathon

We celebrated Easter

Cannon’s First Easter Basket

And enjoyed meeting the Easter Bunny

So stoked to meet the Easter Bunny

The weather has finally started to turn so we have enjoyed playing outside at the park

and in the grass

Cannon also loves playing with his puppy

We just love this little guy so much, everyone tells you but you just can’t know until you KNOW.

April 2017 Goals

I can’t believe it’s April already, but I am excited to see spring popping its pretty little head up here and there with promises of longer days and better weather.

I started this post at the begining of March as a recap of how February’s goals went and document March’s goals. I think one of them was going to be to post more (HA!) so that was a miss but I did set a goal of running 175 miles in March and actually ran 201 miles so one miss and one win.

I will go ahead and recap how February now and just skip March.

1. To run 120 miles. This may not seem like much, especially since I am in the thick of marathon training but I am determined to build up slowly so I don’t get injured. I set a goal of running 100 miles in January and just made it with 102 miles. – check! I actually ran 156 miles, so I call that a total win =)

2. Run everyday in February. I don’t think that a “run streak” is necessary but for me I like the idea of not thinking about when to run and just setting up really good habits of running everyday. It doesn’t have to be long, just 20 minutes to count in my book. This is a fun goal but one I will give up on if I feel that I am going to get injured. – again check! Some days it wasn’t even 2 miles but I ran, every day.

3. Strength train at least twice a week – Miss…..I don’t know WHY this is so hard for me, I had two weeks where I only got one session in. I guess I will have to keep trying.

4. Try to post on the blog at least twice a week, three would be better but I want to be realistic. I really want to remember this time in my life and documenting it here means a lot to me. I would like to include marathon training updates for my first big race back after baby. – I got 9 posts done in February, so I hit my 2 posts a week goal, but not the stretch goal of three times a week.

5. Continue to prioritize and put family first. January was pretty crazy with some life changes (more on that later) but I was happy that I was still able to be present and prioritize time with my family. This one is a bit intangible but I think I will know if I have been successful. – This one is hard to say, it’s getting harder as work is getting more involved, training is ramping up and other obligations pop up. On a day to day, Cannon is my priority but I would still like to have more time with family and friends.

For April I have 2 main goals:

  1. Taper well and finish my marathon with a smile on my face. I truly don’t have a time goals for this race. The terrain is so unknown to me and reported to be very difficult so I just want to finish my first real post baby race.
  2. recover from my marathon and get serious about ultra training. I have big goals for the summer and it’s time to start getting after them!
  3. Go to at least one baby group a week. It’s important to me that Cannon and I get out of the house and he gets time to interact with other kids. We did our first Library story time this morning and it was a lot of fun. I have been finding more and more groups/classes to join so I am happy about that.
  4. Post on the blog more…trying for this one again. This is a stretch goal but I really want to remember this time in my life and documenting it here helps with that.
  5. Lastly I would like to lose at least 6 pounds in April. I don’t want to focus too much on weight but running long distances will be a lot easier if I have less weight to carry over 50+ miles. I have been able to lose all the “baby weight” and a little more but I have a little ways to go to get to my ideal race weight.

So that’s it, wish me luck for April!

Cannon // 9 Month Check In

This update is SOOOOO late but better late than never, right?

Cannon is such a sweet happy little guy, I am thankful everyday that I get to hang out with him.

Cannon is now 19 lbs 12 oz (52%) and 28.75 in (67%)

He still doesn’t have any teeth, but he still eats really well. His favorites are bananas and berries. He absolutely hates oatmeal, even when mixed with banana, the face he makes is hilarious.

Cannon is scooting and rolling and getting where he wants to go, I wouldn’t call it great crawling but I think we will be there soon!

He is also pulling himself up and walking assisted on furniture and toys.

Cannon also loves being outside as much as possible.

He loves going on picnics, hikes and to the park.
