Must Haves When Traveling to a Race

We leave for Moab the day after tomorrow! Prepping for a out-of-town race can be a lot of fun and a lot of work. We have traveled to our fair share of races, both driving and flying to our races. Here are some of my must haves when traveling for a race.

  • First must have is Google Sheets – Luckily driving to a trail race in Moab is a lot easier to pack for than an international flight for an Ironman. Regardless of the type of race we are traveling for we always make a pack list in Google Sheets so that we can both add to it and use it to actually pack up. I usually start this list weeks in advance and add to it as I think of things I might need.

This is just a snip of one of the lists from an ironman we did back in 2015. This year I will be trading bike bottles for baby bottles. Even though we won’t need as much gear for the race we will be traveling with a toddler and baby.

I actually really love the planning and packing part of a trip, is that weird? There is something so fun about making lists, laying everything out and crossing things off. It’s just all the unpacking that I don’t like. Also I am not great at actually loading all the items into the car, lucky for me Cory is exceptional at this task. I take on the bulk of gathering and packing bags then let him play the Tetris game of fitting it all in.

Here is a great pack list from Runner’s World for different types of races to get your list started.

  • Bikes Ready to travel to Lake Tahoe
  • Fitting everything into our tiny car!
  • Another must have for me is Airbnb hotels are great but when traveling for a race I really like having a kitchen so we can prep our own food and it is nice to have a little more space and not feel bad about rolling a bike through a hotel!
  • Compression! My feet swell easily every time I travel. To help with this I try to always wear compression socks while traveling. I really like Pro Compression, they have great socks and fun patterns.
Oh hey Colorado Peaks!
  • Lots of water! This may fall under the obvious category but I have often neglected hydrating enough while traveling. It’s easy to forget and it’s tempting to not drink on purpose so you don’t have to take as many bathroom breaks. Bathroom breaks are actually a really great chance to stretch your legs so go ahead and drink away!
  • Pack a surge protector. I bought a cheap surge protector that lives in my suitcase specifically for travel. Hotels especially never have enough plugs for all the technology I bring with me (phone, iPad, Computer, Garmin, etc)
  • If you are flying you must have a well packed carry-on! It would be beyond terrible to show up to your race destination and have your bags not be there with you. As best as you can pack all your race must haves in your carry on (shoes, lucky shorts, etc). If you are flying with your bike give it a big kiss and really hope it shows up (a bike transport service can take the stress off if you don’t want to fly with your bike).

Time to Plan the Race-cation

I am now officially signed up for the Mt. Hood 50 Mile race.

[Source]

We were planning a trip to Oregon to see family this summer so this race is just a bonus part of the trip!

I love a race you have to travel for or a race-cation if you will.

These two cuties hanging out in Moab for my race Arches Ultra last year.

I posted about traveling to races HERE . Traveling to an international Ironman takes less stuff then traveling with two kids.

Some of my favorite races I have traveled for:

Ironman Lake Tahoe, Pacific Crest Half Ironman, Boston Marathon (spectator), Arches Ultra and Berlin Marathon

I can’t wait to pack up my family and head to my home state to run further than I ever have.

Teeth + No Voice + Finally an A Race

Our sweet little Emmy has been teething this week, the last few nights she has woken up overnight clearly in pain. My heart breaks when it seems like she is in pain. It also shines a light on how easy we have had it that both kids started sleeping through the night very early on. Also we are just getting into teething now at almost ten months so others have to deal with this much earlier. While I hate that anything might hurt her we are all enjoying some extra cuddles.

In the morning we went to a Valentines party with Cannon’s little friends. He was pretty excited about eating a cupcake and playing.

You can see his little hand trying to steal chocolates. I remember Valentines Day being so fun when I was little and I love sharing it with the kids now too.

Because of the broken sleep I wasn’t feeling up to getting up at four am to run so after naps I bundled the kids up and we went for an afternoon jog.

Unfortunately after a few days of feeling under the weather I have completely lost my voice. It’s been an interesting challenge trying to parent with no voice.

Even with all the challenges I am pretty excited about this years running. I have been thinking long and hard about what I wanted my big goal to be for this year and I finally settled on a race! I considered a lot of different races and distances but nothing was feeling right. I wanted something big that would push me out of my comfort zone this summer. The race needed to be mid to late summer to give me enough time to train. It also needed to be before fall because we are going to Germany in late September and it would be too hard to keep up serious training while traveling for almost three weeks.

When I thought of Run Rabbit Run 50 it seemed to fit just right. I would have the entire summer to train, get into the mountains as much as possible and a little over a week to recover before our flight. This schedule feels right to me.

Source

I am nervous about the amount of climbing and the altitude. This is definitely not a beginners course.

But it’s hard to come across an easy ultra course in Colorado and I am most interested in a a scenic run and Run Rabbit delivers on views as much as the difficult terrain.

Source

So here we go, a 50 day run streak to kick off 50 mile training!

Yes I am starting my training now with 11 weeks of base building to build up my endurance and durability before starting a more specific 20 week training plan where I will focus on climbing, technical trails in May. I will start altitude training once the mountain trails thaw in the summer. Cory and I have already discussed how we want to take the kids camping in the mountains this summer and he is totally onboard for me running on trails while he hangs with the kids.

Desert Rats Trail Marathon – Trail Running Festival Race Report

In April I ran my first marathon since having Cannon. I worked hard and got on as many trails as possible during the winter months in Boulder. When searching for an early season trail race Desert Rats Trail Marathon seemed like a good fit. I came in feeling ready for the distance but I was a little fearful of the hills and the heat.

We packed up the car, with what seemed like everything we own (9 months old need a lot when traveling!)  on Friday morning and started heading west to Fruita, Colorado.

Fruita is a really cute small town with a big focus on mountain biking, it reminded me a lot of Moab. We rolled into Fruita in the late afternoon and checked into our hotel. We stayed at the Fruita Comfort Inn which was everything we needed for a place to crash before a race and was really affordable. I particularly liked that the room had a microwave and a refrigerator, this was great for traveling with a baby.  Cannon was stoked on the king sized bed.

After checking in we headed to packet pick-up at the Fruita Community Center. In true trail race form packet pick-up was low-key and easy to get in and out of. After we had my shirt and bib we went to The Hot Tomato for pre-race pizza. The Hot Tomato was really cute but it was standing room only on a Friday evening so we put in our order and took Cannon back to the hotel so we could relax and get his dinner. We ate in our hotel room, got Cannon ready for bed and all turned in early.

Race morning was really easy, the trail head was just 15 minutes outside of town with plenty of parking. We got to the start line before the sun was up.

The start was nice and low key with plenty of bathrooms which is key to a successful race start! The race director reminded us to carry  water as the aid stations were 5-7 miles apart. The marathon and 50k started together, there was only about 70 runners in each race so the start was easy to navigate and find your pace group. You also run the first 2 miles on a jeep road before turning onto single track so there was no worry of getting caught in the wrong place in a conga line. The first climb was pretty long but afforded us a great view at the top.

The course was beautiful and kept us entertained with views and varying terrain.

Lots of smooth single track and rocky technical sections.

[Source] – Race photos were free with entry!

There is over 3000 feet of climbing and basically no flat sections to this course so if you are looking for a fast time, this race is not for you.

My favorite part of the course was where you run along the edge of a cliff above the river.

Then you get to run along the ridge above and see where you just were.

I took my time on the course, for me this was not about setting a PR, the course was difficult and it was hot!!! I just wanted to have fun so I did just that and took lots of pictures along the way.

My least favorite part of the race came right at the end, there is a really steep long climb along the highway on a jeep road, it’s not as pretty as the rest of the course. I was also cooked and ready to be done. Running in 70-80 degree heat after training all winter is a shock to the system.

The finish was fun, with lots of good food, Gemini Events knows we want more than a stale bagel and half a banana. They had the grills going and everyone was having a party.

I was tired and SO SO SO happy to be reunited with my boys.

Finisher medals were dog tags, nice little reminder of the race. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone looking for an early season trail race. They have the marathon and 50k on Saturday and a 10k or half marathon on Sunday.

Harvest Moon Long Course Race Report

This race was over a week ago but between traveling and just not feeling that inspired to talk about the race I have been putting off writing my race report. When people ask me how the race went my automatic reaction is “good” and when I think about it on the whole it was but when I start breaking down the pieces it actually didn’t go so well. I learned a lot of things that I need to work on before taking on a full ironman early next season.

On race morning Cory and got up early to head out to Aurora reservoir where transition opened at 6am. There was a long line of cars with nice bikes lined up waiting to get in when we arrived at 5:45 am, by the time we got to transition we didn’t get the best rack position but this was not an A race for me so it wasn’t a huge deal. I went into this race not very nervous but also not with high expectations because I had not been training at all. I have been trying to rest and recover from my knee injury so with no running and little swimming and biking I was just looking to finish. After racking our bikes we suited up in our wetsuits, after not putting it on for a month I was happy when it zipped up. We then headed down to the swim start for a quick warm up. We then all gathered for last minute instructions and the national anthem. We also had a moment of silence for the anniversary of 9/11, it was weird and moving to be surrounded by silent athletes, it’s a rare occasion, I was happy that everyone took it seriously.

Swim:
The swim was laid out in a triangular single loop course, at first it looked like a perfect triangle but by the time my wave went off (last) the winds had moved everything around. I had the worst time sighting and swam way off course. At one point a kayaker even had to hunt my down to ask me to get back on course, I was embarrassed and frustrated that I was wasting so much time and effort swimming so erratically. I did a little better after turning around and heading back towards shore since I was not looking into the sun, but still not great. I was so happy to get out of the water and be done with that part. I have a lot of work to do to improve my swim!

Swim Time: 44:53

T1:
When I got out of the water I felt drunk and dizzy, the water was shockingly choppy so it was hard to run up the slope to T1 (this probably added to my crappy swim time) I saw my parents who were cheering for me and said hi to the doodles before heading off into transition. I had a fairly normal transition except for the dizziness slowing me down. I decided to skip putting sun block on since it was over cast and I really wanted to get going, this was a BIG mistake! I burned and am still peeling (gross).

T1 Time: 2:40

Bike: The first few miles of the bike were touchy since I was still dizzy from the swim but after a few minutes my head cleared up and I started taking in fuel and liquids. This was my first time racing with my aero sip and I love it, it really helps me stay hydrated while riding. While heading out there was a little headwind but not too bad and nothing was hurting so I was happy, I saw and cheered for Cory on a little out and back portion and that gave me a lift too. I then turned around and had the wind to my back I was having a great time except the road was really bumpy and my sits were starting to get sore. At about mile 30 we turned into the wind and it really started to pick up. I then started to not have a great time, the winds were strong, I was riding up hill and was working hard to ride with a speed in the single digits. The road on the way back is chip seal and I thought my teeth were going to rattle out of my head and my lady parts were screaming, more reason to buy a carbon frame! I was disappointed that I biked so slow and was so tired, I know this winter I am going to have to put in some real work on getting faster on the bike. I was happy that the never had the sever burning pain in my knee that I had during the bike for Pacific Crest so that was a bright spot.

Bike Time: 3:33:31

I was so so so happy riding into T2 knowing I didn’t have to run a half marathon. I did have to run about 400 yards to the finish and didn’t want to run barefoot so I threw on my shoes and then took off for the finish. After crossing the line there was a blow-up slip and slide that was the highlight of my day. It was really fun way to cool off and celebrate being done.

T2 Time: 1:19

I was happy to be done but was soaked so I met my parents and then grabbed some clothes to change into. I then waited around for Cory to finish his race, he came in under 6 hours, he had a difficult run but I am so proud of him! I was sad that I didn’t finish the full tri but was happy that I sucked it up and at least finished the aqua bike since I had already paid for the race and hate have DNS or DNFs.

Overall it was a well run race with some difficult conditions, I learned I have a lot to work on and hope to heal completely soon so I can get to work.

Winter Camping – Cheyenne Mountain State Park

We had the BEST weekend camping for the first time in our tiny camper (Kermit).

We bought Kermit back at the end of October and haven’t had a chance to take it out until now. For camper people Kermit is a 2018 R-pod 171, basically the smallest camper R-Pod makes. We love it because we wanted something light and small that would do well boondocking and traveling on dirt roads. Kermit has an ‘off road’ package so we can take it back to off grid sites.

For a winter trip we wanted to stay out of the mountains and somewhere not too far from home because it was our first trip and we weren’t sure how everything would work. We settled on Cheyenne Mountain State Park because it was just two hours from home and was just outside of Colorado Springs. The campground is beautiful with fantastic views of both the city and mountains.

The sites have full hook-ups but we decided to just dry camp, we didn’t want to have to winterize Kermit again so we just brought water with us and used the campground facilities. We did use the electricity for heating and other utilities.

We really love the layout and functionality of our tiny trailer, we had a different trailer that we took with us to Yellowstone in the fall that had a bunkhouse but it didn’t really work for us so we sold it and this one is a much better fit. We all think it’s very cozy!

Because it was cold out we ate inside but hopefully in the summer we will be spending most of our time outside. Emmy hasn’t been into sleeping outside (yet) but Cannon is looking forward to sleeping in a tent this summer.

The park has amazing trails that run throughout the park and campground. We went hiking everyday that we were there.

We didn’t know ahead of time but there was an ultra being held while we were there! Human Potential was holding the Stories Ultra there was a 6, 15 and 30 hour race going.

It was fun cheering for the runners all weekend. We could see them running with headlamps and going all day and night! One runner mentioned that he is training for the Barkley Marathons, these people are amazing.

Sunrise magic! The entrance to NORAD is right up the mountain from the campground, the area is very interesting!

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed winter camping. We specifically stayed away from snow and went on a very mild weekend so that helped a lot. I can’t wait for summer and all the camping we will do!

Don’t worry the kids were just hanging out while we got the trailer hooked up, they ride in the back in car seats 😉

We came home Sunday afternoon with plenty of time to watch the Super Bowl.

Controlling What I can – Racing in 2020

Anyone else feel like so much is out of control and unknown? I don’t know when it will be safe enough to get “back to normal” or if there ever will be a normal as we used to know it. We had a couple trips planned for this year and for sure we won’t be going to Oregon in July. It is possible that the economy will be re-opened by then but it seems that without a vaccine it would be irresponsible to travel when it’s not necessary. The 50 mile race I signed up for has not been canceled and who knows if it will be but we will most likely not be there for the start. =(

Oregon trails are the best

I am really bummed that we won’t be traveling to Oregon in July. This is how big the kiddos were when we were there last time.

When it became clear that this virus wasn’t going away anytime soon it was hard to think about really making big running plans. Who knows when it will be safe and responsible to race again!?!

I love having a goal on the schedule and not know what the future held for me running wise left me feeling flat and no very excited. I really felt like I needed something to help lift my spirits and something to look forward to.

I finally decided that what I needed was something that was within my control, that I could do regardless of what Covid-19. I decided to run a 50 miler in September, my birthday is in September so that seemed like a good time to shoot for. I am not planning on specific event because I don’t want to depend on something running or not. There are a few local races that I might sign up for if it’s safe by then. But that depends if I can get in as well.

One of my favorite places to run

If not I will just do a family supported run somewhere fun. Possibly Leadville but if that isn’t safe then just around out home. Or if things have really improved we will look at a fall trip to Oregon and there are some great trails and races there too, I am keeping my options open.

Whatever works but I WILL run 50 miles somewhere in September, that I feel like I can somewhat control, even if it’s ten mile loops around my house 😉

European Adventure – Berlin Days 4-6

Our fourth day in Berlin started off with a trip on Berlin’s S-BAHN (Berlin’s under and above ground train system) Cannon loved traveling by train and bus.

We then hopped aboard a bus to visit some of the sites including the Victory Column, a monument to victory in the Danish-Prussian War in the 19th century.

We didn’t do as much walking to see the monuments as we would have liked since it was pouring down rain.

We made our way to Breitscheidplatz and found a place to enjoy lunch.

We tried to eat in an Irish Pub but it was full of cigarette smoke. It big shock to me was how many people still smoke in Germany and all the paces you are still allowed to smoke. We moved on and found a Bavarian restaurant that didn’t allow smoking. After lunch we explored the Breitscheidplatz

We then toured the Gedächtniskirche, which was beautiful and haunting.

“The Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is the symbolic centre of West Berlin, an anti-war memorial to peace and reconciliation. Following allied bombing during WWII, the original west Tower has remained standing as a ruin and is hauntingly named the “hollow tooth” as it is literally an empty husk. Immediately recognizable and located on the Breitscheidplatz at the start of the busy shopping district which includes Tauentzienstraße and Ku’damm, this is the only building on the square which was spared by the bombing and deliberately preserved as a part ruin.” – Source

Breitscheidplatz is also the site of a 2016 terror attack during the famous Christmas market. They laid a bronze line where the truck plowed into the market killing and injuring many.

After our time in the square we made our way over to the Berlin Aquarium to escape the rain.

The aquarium was a little old which was charming in some ways but definitely not my favorite aquarium (opened in 1913).

The kids loved the exhibits and enjoyed being able to run around out of the rain. It was also three stories tall which was interesting.

After all day out in the rain we weren’t feeling up to heading out again for dinner so we brought pizza back to our hotel room and all agreed that was a great idea!

DAY 5

On our fifth day in Berlin we started the day with a trip to local coffee shop, this one was attached to a bike shop and was super cute.

My parents decided to take a quiet day and we took the kids to the Berlin Zoo.

The zoo is even older than the Aquarium, opened in 1844!

We loved the zoo, it was gorgeous.

The exhibits were great and the kids loved a huge playground that was there.

We were ran off earlier than we would have liked by a heavy down pour.

Pandas!!!

we then went out for a delicious Italian dinner so my Mom could carb-load for her marathon the next day.

DAY 6 – Marathon Day!

We were up nice and early to see mom off to the start line. We didn’t want to bring the entire circus but Cannon is my little adventure buddy and came with me to see mom as far as we could.

It was really easy to get around on the S-BAHN and to get to the start line.

Cannon enjoyed being his Grandma’s crew.

We saw mom all the way to the start corrals where non-racers were not allowed. After seeing her off we went back towards the hotel in search of coffee.

The race went just a few blocks from the hotel so we went to see mom at around mile 7.

They were happier than they appear

If we didn’t have the kids with us we could have used public transit and see her a few other places but we don’t travel fast with these little ones and they don’t like being drug all across the city. We did find a playground so they could get some energy out and lunch before heading to the finish line.

Just after playing at the park it started to pour down rain. We were all feeling sorry for the marathoners who were likely freezing. We made our way to the finish line to see mom and were all soaked and freezing. We were so happy to see mom finish her marathon and try to get her back to the hotel to rest and warm up. We were all cold and tired (especially mom) so we ate dinner in our hotel rooms and packed to leave the next day!

This was the point that we parted ways with my parents, they were off for a river cruise (which looks like it was amazing!) and we were off to tour southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria. We enjoyed our time in Berlin, most of all cheering mom on for her race.

Up next, travel day and Nuremberg!

Recovery Favorites and Back to Routine

Trying to get back to “normal” around here, but after being out of town for the weekend, it feels like our house will never be put back together. Send help to get unburied from laundry and piles of things, we don’t have too long before we need to pack up again. We are headed to California on Sunday!

While I love traveling and going on adventures with my family I thrive on routine. I love having an idea of what is going to happen during the day, when I am going to get my run in how I am going to keep the kids happy and healthy. I really do believe that sleep is part of a child’s health and getting in predictable naps is part of that. I am actually working hard to keep up healthy habits even when I am thrown off my normal routine but it’s not natural for me.

Yesterday Emmy had a follow up with the eye doctor to see if her eyes are developing as they should. It is important to be sure she is using both of her eyes well and equally. Otherwise her eye sight might not develop as it should. I really like our Doctor he really takes his time to check Emmy’s sight and explain everything to us. As of now her eyes are looking great and she is using them equally well. I was so happy to get a good report! We will keep checking in on her as Cory and my father both don’t have great eye sight so it’s something to watch.

During Emmy’s appointment Cannon hung out with his grandparents, they all had a blast.

After collecting Cannon we came home to have dinner and play. Cannon was excited to be back with all of his toys.

After that I had a sports massage to help refresh my muscles from the half marathon and long car trip home.

__________________________________________

Going to my massage got me thinking about my favorite forms of recovery after races or hard workouts. I wrote a tongue and cheek post about How Not to Recover from a half marathon back in 2012 when I was training for my first Ironman. It got me thinking about my current favorite recovery methods:

  • Massage! If you can get in and get some work done by a professional, awesome! Some races have massages available at the finish line. I have never done that. What is your experience with finish line massages?
  • Rolling is a great way to loosen up tight muscles. We use “The Stick” roller and Trigger Points Grid Roller No Meat Athlete has great instructions on foam rolling here.
  • Elevated Legs recovery system boots, these things are great and have worked for YEARS. Both Cory and I use them and I think we bought them in 2013 so it’s been a great investment.
  • Compression Socks! These were a great help on the drive home from Moab. I really like PRO Compression socks.
  • Active Recovery. It’s easy to want to be lazy the rest of the day after a race but doing some easy movement after a race can really help. We went for a hike after my half marathon and it felt great. When I was training for my ultra in 2017 Cannon had swim lessons on Sunday afternoons. Being in the pool after my long runs really seemed to help! We should really sign up Emmy for lessons this year =)

There are lots of other recovery methods as well, including ice baths (not for me in the winter), protein, clean eating, hydration, etc. I wrote more about it HERE.

Moab in the Winter

We are finally back from our trip to Moab for the weekend. I loved visiting Moab in the winter, the weather was amazing, the park was nice a quiet and it was easy (and cheap) to find a rental.

Throwing it back a couple days, I was worried on Thursday that the trip might not happen at all. Earlier in the week Emmy came down with a cold that had some concerning symptoms. I took her to the pedestrian to be sure that it was safe to travel with her and that we wouldn’t be making her feel worse. With reassurances from our (amazing) doctor that she would be just fine we went ahead with packing and prepping to leave Friday morning.

Why is it that traveling with kids, even for just a couple nights feels like you are taking half of your belongings with you?!?

Friday morning we hit the road for what would normally take 5.5 hours to drive to Moab.

We took a few breaks along the way to stretch our legs and refuel

We took a quick strabucks break in Frisco, then pushed on to Rifle Colorado to have lunch/dinner.

We found an indoor playground and spent a long time getting some energy out.

We eventually arrived at our rental at about 8pm

Cannon was excited to be out of the car!

The condo was really cute southwest/adobe style with just enough room for us and our friends (and their super sweet girls) who joined us.

We settled in and got to bed as quickly as possible as it was past the kids bedtime and my race was the next morning!

Saturday morning started not as early as most race mornings. My start time wasn’t until 9am so I got to wake up with the kiddos, enjoy some coffee and take my time getting to the race start that was just 10 minutes out of town.

We didn’t have time to go to packet pick-up on Friday evening so we arrived at the race start about 45 minutes early and that was plenty of time to go to packet pick-up and get ready for the race. I love how relaxed and easy trail races are!

The race venue was stunning and I felt so grateful to be able to be there and get to race. Race report coming soon!

Waiting for Mom to start her race….Cannon doesn’t look impressed.

While I was running everyone else went rock “climbing” (as much as toddlers can do) and exploring.

After finishing my race my legs felt a bit beat up from all the slick rock but I was ready to spend some time with my family and our friends. We went back to the condo so I could shower and eat lunch.

We then took the kids to hike to Delicate Arch. Unfortunately there was ice on the cliffs that we didn’t want to take the kids on so we didn’t make it to the arch but it was still fun to get out and a good shake out for my legs.

After our hike we went to Eddie McStiff’s for Pizza. Cory and I shared the veggie, it was really good!

After dinner the kids and I were tired so we went back to the condo for stories, snuggles and bedtime.

Sunday morning came and it was time to head home. It was definitely not enough time and we would have loved more but we will be back again soon for sure.

The drive home took almost ten hours between our stops and the relentless ski traffic. If I had it to do over again I would for sure stay until Monday to avoid sitting in traffic so long.

We finished up our tour of France with a couple da We finished up our tour of France with a couple days in Disneyland Paris. I love Disney Parks and visiting Disneyland Paris was a dream come true. We had such an amazing time on our entire trip.

We are trying to plan our next trip. Where is the best place you have ever been? Do you have a favorite trip? I would love to hear about it. My parents say that Ireland was their favorite so UK tops the list currently but Italy or Costa Rica are on the list too.
In our last couple of days in Paris we took a bus In our last couple of days in Paris we took a bus tour to see the major sights. Our favorites included walking the entire Champs-Élysées and climbing to the top of the Arc de Triomphe. We missed out on seeing the Catacombs because we didn’t get tickets early enough. c’est la vie, I guess we will have to go back 😉
A cousin reminded me that I never finished sharing A cousin reminded me that I never finished sharing our trip to France 🫠 better late than never!

We spent our first day back in Paris with a trip to Versailles. We loved the gardens so much and particularly enjoyed Marie Antoinette’s little farm. The history here is incredible and the opulence overwhelming. We walked over 10 miles on our visit!
Before our long drive back to Paris we did the thr Before our long drive back to Paris we did the three castle hike in Ribeauvillé, France. We climbed up the side of a hill to three castle ruins from the 14th century. It was really fun to explore and a great way to burn some energy before a long drive.
While we were in the Alsace region of France we vi While we were in the Alsace region of France we visited the sweet little village of Riquewihr. Rumor says this was the inspiration for Belle’s village in Disney’s Beaty and the Beast. Can you see it? We could and kept singing Bonjour while walking through town.
After leaving Switzerland we made our way to Colma After leaving Switzerland we made our way to Colmar. This sweet little town in the Alsace region of France near the German border. We loved all the half timber buildings and winding streets. We had some great local food and wine. Colmar was a lovely place to get lost for an afternoon.
It was so exciting to see the Matterhorn in person It was so exciting to see the Matterhorn in person. The peak was never fully clear of clouds while we were there which was a little disappointing but it was still majestic . We took a cog train and gondola up then hiked about five miles down on the five lakes trail. It was a beautiful day and we got to enjoy lunch mid hike. We loved the little (car free) town of Zermatt. We enjoyed some fun Swiss playgrounds in town before dinner. I love Switzerland and it’s mountains!
With the last of our time in Chamonix we took a go With the last of our time in Chamonix we took a gondola and cable car up Le Brévent. We enjoyed hot chocolates and crepes at the top with views of Mont Blanc.

Next it was time to drive on to Switzerland 🇨🇭
We took a cute cogwheel train up the valley in Cha We took a cute cogwheel train up the valley in Chamonix to Montenvers to visit the Mer de Glace glacier. At the top you can take a gondola a little way down then MANY stairs to the glacier. It was sad to see the markers of where the glacier was in years past and how much it has shrunk. We did love exploring an ice cave that they dig out each year. We had to try twice to get into the ice caves as the first time it closed right as we arrived due to a storm. It was worth taking the train twice.
After riding to the top of Aiguille du Midi we sto After riding to the top of Aiguille du Midi we stopped half way down for a couple mile hike and a stop at a mountain hut for lunch. This might have been my favorite lunch ever. The views were amazing and the weather was nice. The mountains here are STUNNING!!! #aiguilledumidi #chamonix
We decided to spend a few day in Chamonix to explo We decided to spend a few day in Chamonix to explore the French Alps. The experience we were most excited about was taking the gondola up the
Aiguille du Midi (highest cable car in France). You switch cable cars half way up so you can enjoy the views. The top outpost is incredible perching on top of the mountain. I’ve never seen anything like it!

The day wasn’t completely clear but the views were still incredible. #aiguilledumidi #chamonix
After a long drive across the French countryside w After a long drive across the French countryside we landed in Annecy at the foot of the Alps.

Annecy was such a pretty little town on the bank of a gorgeous turquoise lake. We got to enjoy lunch at a canal side cafe, wander the streets, enjoy ice cream and playground hop our way through town.

Very excited about our next few days in mountains of France + Switzerland.
We drove into the heart of France to visit the Go We drove into the heart of France to visit the Gouffre de Padirac. A large cave system including an underground river. I don’t have many good pictures given the lighting and lack of patience. We loved climbing down into the cave and riding a boat along the river. Probably my favorite cave that I have visited. Kids loved all of it too and are so good about us dragging them along with us across France.
After leaving Mont Saint-Michele we drove to Loire After leaving Mont Saint-Michele we drove to Loire to visit Château de Chenonceau. It was stunning and the gardens were fun to explore. The history here is so rich!
