Black Forest Fire

I am sad to say that fire season is officially here in Colorado. There are a couple burning in the state now and it’s never a good time. I really hope that nobody is injured because of the Black Forest Fire burning in Monument Colorado. This fire has impacted over 9,000 people but there are no reports of injuries or deaths so far. Thanks to all the firefighters and officials for what they do!!!

I realize that  wildfires are a healthy part of ecosystem cycles but it’s so sad when people and animals are hurt or lose their homes.
Source
The wind is blowing the smoke from this massive fire right into Denver. I am lucky that the only impact this has on me is that I can’t breath well and I smell like a camp fire. So tonights workout will not happen given the air quality and my already compromised lungs.
In case any of you will be impacted by wildfires this summer, I copied this from the Colorado Department of health website

What can you do if smoke from wildfires is affecting you and your family?

To Top

There are a few simple actions you should consider that can minimize exposure to smoke that makes its way into a community. The extent of the precautions you take should reflect how heavy the smoke is, how long it lasts, and your household’s risk as described above.

  • If you smell smoke and/or are beginning to experience symptoms, consider temporarily locating to another area as long as it is safe for you to do so.
  • Seek out locations where air is filtered. For example, heading to the local mall, movie theater or recreation center can provide some temporary relief. Local health officials often can help locate places with better air quality during extended smoke episodes.
  • Close windows and doors and stay indoors. However, do not close up your home tightly if it makes it dangerously warm inside.
  • Only if they are filtered, run the air conditioning, the fan feature on your home heating system (with the heat turned off) or your evaporative cooler. Keep the outdoor air intake closed and be sure the filter is clean. Filtered air typically has less smoke than the air outdoors. Running these appliances if they are not filtered can make indoor smoke worse.
  • If you have any HEPA room air filtration units, use them.
  • In smokey air reduce your physical activity level. Avoid exercise or other strenuous activities in heavy smoke. If smoke is simply unpleasant or mildly irritating, changing the timing of a few activities may be all that is necessary.
  • Give extra attention to the things that help keep a person healthy at any time. Make healthy eating choices, drink plenty of fluid, get ample sleep, and exercise in clean air. To the extent that you can, avoid or mitigate stress by keeping in touch with friends and family, exercising, and using other methods of taking a break from worries.
  • Avoid smoking secondhand smoke, vacuuming, candles and other sources of additional air pollution.
  • Commercially available dust masks may seem like a good idea, but they do virtually nothing to filter out the particles and gasses in smoke.

At Night:

  • At night smoke may move in different directions than smoke does in the day, and can be heavy–especially if the outdoor air is still. It tends to be worst near dawn.
  • Close bedroom windows at night.
  • To prepare for nighttime smoke, consider airing out your home during the early or middle of the afternoon when smoke tends to be more diluted. Use your best judgment. If smoke is thick during the day, follow the tips above.

If symptoms persist or become more severe, please contact your primary health care provider.

Please stay safe out there friends!

Friday Five

Todays post is just five random things, so here we go:

1. I am so excited for a day off, I haven’t had a full day off in three weeks and it’s long overdue! (ok I can’t complain, most of that time was in Mexico, but I still need to do laundry and grocery shop)

2. My mom is participating in a triathlon clinic that ends in a practice race tomorrow, I can’t wait to go cheer her on. NewbieHeader.png

3. I have the biggest brick of the season on my schedule tomorrow with a 60 mile ride and 6 mile run

4. I got back into my wetsuit for the first time this year, win!

5. It’s national donut day, I love all these silly national __________ days, it’s extra fun because Portland’s VooDoo Doughnuts is opening a shop in Denver this fall!

Prepping For Pacific Crest

I was supposed to race my first triathlon this weekend, but unfortunately they moved the date of the race to September, same day as IMLT. So now my focus is on my next race that is a half ironman. I have just over three weeks before the race, two weeks (three if you include this week) to focus on getting some solid training in before a mini taper. I didn’t get much training in while I was in Mexico so I really need to get to work!

DSCN8567.JPG

I am so looking forward to Pac Crest I raced it back in 2011 and LOVED it, probably my favorite race I have ever done. DSCN4089.JPG

It’s a big endurance festival that includes the long course triathlon, olympic triathlon, marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k and some really cute kiddie events. The events are held in Sun River, a really cute resort community in central Oregon. The bike course goes around Mt. Bachelor and the views are breathtaking!

DSCN4029.JPG

Temperatures for this race can be all over the board, we lucked out in 2011 with warmish temps although the swim is notoriously cold. Last year it was freezing! So fingers crossed for warm water and coolish air.

What is your favorite race and why?

300 days

Ironman Los Cabos is 300 days away. I am seriously considering signing up for this race.

Source

My biggest concern is the heat. It was pretty hot this year and in 2014 the race is about two weeks later. Also training in the winter in Denver might be interesting, but I kind of like the challenge. Also I have been to Baja twice this year so maybe I should go somewhere new. I looked into it and Cabo seems to be the best early season race for me. So now it’s just deciding (and paying for it $$$) here’s hoping it doesn’t fill up fast so I can make up my mind.

Anyone thinking of racing Cabo?

Off the grid

I am very excited to be heading off to Mexico this morning. I won’t be at a nice resort with wifi and an open bar. I will be at a sea research station and ranch, with very limited electricity and no running water. But that makes me even more excited. This means you won’t hear from me for the rest of the month. So have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and I will catch up with you guys in June!

Four months from today….

I can’t believe that Ironman Lake Tahoe is only four months away! It feels too close, especially since I am traveling out of the country for 12 days and training will be little to none. But my coach says it will be fine and I will be focused and ready to get after it when I get back. Then the real work begins!

Designer Whey Product Review

The nice people at Designer Whey sent me this giant box of product to review at the beginning of the month. Luckily for me this month has been full of opportunities for recovery.

I used the powder in my green monster smooth, it was delish!

The shake was super convent after my longest swim of the year

And the bars were great in Moab and after my long run today

I really enjoyed all the products I have tried so far and after my current stash runs out will definitely restock!

Some of the benefits of Whey Protein for Designers Whey’s Website:

High Biological Value

Whey is superior to all other forms of protein, boasting the perfect amino acid profile for muscle building, strength, and recovery. Based on its biological value (BV), the measure of a particular protein’s effect on nitrogen balance, as well as its protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS), a measure of how well a particular protein supplies the nine essential amino acids, whey protein scored higher than meat and eggs!

Whey protein also empties from the stomach and is absorbed into the bloodstream faster than other proteins, which results in speedier muscle recovery. As such, it is the preferred choice for post-workout nutrition when the body is in a catabolic state.

Strong Amino Acids

Whey protein contains high concentrations of the branched chain amino acids that are metabolized during exercise, most notably valine, isoleucine, and leucine.

Abundant Antioxidants

Perhaps just as impressively, whey protein works as an antioxidant to boost your body’s immune system. In fact, scientific studies have shown that regular supplementation with whey protein can help prevent illness and disease.

I was provided with this opportunity via my affiliation with FitFluential. I was given the products at no cost to myself, but was not compensated in any other way. All opinions are my own!

My Heart is in Boston

As a middle/back of the pack runner I may never make it to the Boston Marathon but what happened yesterday still feels a bit like a personal attack. There may be millions of runners in the world but somehow it still feels like a small tight knit community. I tossed and turned last night and had trouble sleeping thinking about all the people who were hurt or had a loved one injured. I hurt for everyone affected and I hurt for the sport I love. This incident makes me want to do what I can so I will find ways to contribute (I am sure there will be organized ways to contribute, I will participate), I will give blood (it won’t help people in Boston but it will help someone) and I will run and that will help me.

8401694697.jpeg

I will run another marathon and if I ever qualify for Boston I will show up with a fearless spirit. My hope for all the runners out there is that you band together, you go for a run and find peace.

Ironman Lake Tahoe Training Week 12

It’s been a few weeks since I have updated about my training. Mainly thing are going well, run miles are ramping up for my Marathon in May. I am getting sick of indoor training and am so excited that it’s officially Spring and that means long rides and runs will be comfortable outside soon. Here is how the week shaped up:
Monday: In Mexico, no Ironman workout, just walking around Cabo
Tuesday: Ocean Swim and fly home
Wednesday: yoga and 90 minute trainer ride
Thursday: Tempo run and strength
Friday: 2950 yd swim and 70 minute trainer ride
Saturday: We were snowed and I was feeling a little under the weather in so we decided to move our rest day up – full rest
we got about a foot and lots of ice
Sunday: 18 mile treadmill run, I was really dreading this but it really wasn’t that bad
Total: 12 hrs of training, less than planned based on travel and moving Monday’s rest day up. Moving on to lucky week 13!

Oh Shooooot….I forgot I should be Training for a Marathon

So, I knew that I had signed up for the Colorado Marathon but somehow I didn’t have it in my head that I am TRAINING for a marathon. I was blissfully following along with my training plan, hitting *most* of my workouts when the nice people who run the Colorado Marathon send me this email:
10 weeks until the marathon?!? Wow that makes it more real. I was in my own little safety zone thinking about ironman almost seven months away. But the good news is I LOVE running long. So bring on the long weekend runs, I am ready =)
