Bad Life Choices…..

I was up too late again and didn’t get up early…I really have to get better about getting to bed at a decent time.

We took a break from school in to visit the doctor and Cannon got his Covid booster shot. None of us are sick at the moment but it feels like that won’t last long.

We came home, finished school then had breakfast burritos for lunch.

We visited the library to add books to our snow/polar book shelves. I really like THIS list if you need more winter/snow/polar books.

And because of my bad life choices I was running on the treadmill in the late afternoon.

Do you have any bad life choices you just keep repeating? One day I will get it together.

Normal Life + Grounded Goals

We are now back to “normal life” of school, packing snacks, working on reading, writing, math, etc.

Luckily both kids love school and are excited to be back to it.

I was excited to be taking my new boots out, I am loving them!

I loved THIS article on setting Grounded Goals. I really loved the idea of focusing on the process over outcomes. You can only control so much!

Are you setting big goals for 2023?

Snow Running + Mid Year Check In

We took our PE outside for our run on the snow.

It was such a beautiful day and fun to get out and run on the snow. The kiddos had fun and did great not slipping because they also wore their trail shoes. I firmly believe that you don’t need to spend a lot to get yourself or your kids out hiking. Once we started hiking further and on more technical trails we invested in hiking shoes for Cannon then pass them down to Emerald. Somehow we skipped the next size Emmy needs for Cannon (also these shoes have been worn down from lots of use so we might be buying new for her from now on anyway). We have really liked the Merrell shoes for the kids.

These were on sale for both kids and I have never seen them on sale before! We got the Merrell Kid’s Trail Chaser Hiking Sneaker for Emerald and the Merrell ALTALIGHT Low Hiking Shoes for Cannon.

I think we should get extra points for our run because it felt a little like running in sand. It was cold but so nice to be running outside with my little besties.

We dove into second semester of hybrid school for the kids and I was a bit worried. I thought we might have a really hard time adjusting back and that Cannon would have forgotten a lot. It felt like we were on break for a very long time. I had no need to worry, both kids did amazing and were happy to be back doing school work!

We aren’t changing any of our curriculum that we started in August, we are happy with what we are doing so far.

Cannon finished his Alpha level math curriculum in November so we are starting the Beta level now, since this is second grade level math I don’t think we will finish Beta quite as quickly as Alpha. Also I am planning on getting in Kinder level math for Emmy as she seems ready. If we are still working on these math levels at the end of the year we might work on them over the summer and into next school year.

We are right on track and liking our reading and writing curriculum and I am happy with that.

Also loving doing our own unit studies and digging into topics we find interesting. We are starting a polar animal unit now.

Our plan is to have Emmy and Cannon both do hybrid school next year. They both want to and I am enjoying it so we will continue for now.

Back to Reality + Outside is Best!

We are trying to settle back into reality after all the fun/chaos of the holidays.

We spent a lot of time putting the rest of Christmas away and cleaning up after camping. We are enjoying all the snow we still have, often our snow is gone in a day or two.

I miss the twinkle of the Christmas tree lights for my early morning coffee but it’s also nice to have less clutter around.

We have been embracing winter more, and spending more time outside! Also our outdoor Christmas lights might be up for awhile until we dry out a bit.

All of my running has been on the treadmill lately and I have really been meaning to get outside more, I definitely notice that I am happier all day after a morning run especially if it’s outside. But Cory has been working a lot in the office and with this much snow on the ground the kids can’t come out with me on scooters or bikes. I am so grateful to have this treadmill in our house but tomorrow I am running outside!

Do you prefer running on the treadmill or out in the snow?

Five Favorite Hikes of 2022

We had such an amazing adventures in 2022 and hiking is always something we love to do when we travel and close to home. It was really hard to choose but here are my top 5 hikes from 2022:

Plan de l’Aiguille to Mer de Glace – Chamonix, France

Plan de l’Aiguille to Mer de Glace

When in Chamonix we rode the cable car to Plan de l’Aiguille then hiked part of the way to Mer de Glace, we would have loved to do the entire hike but it’s 8 miles one way and the kids aren’t ready for that big of a hike (yet, next time!). This area is so incredibly beautiful, this takes the #1 spot for me.

5 lakes hike – Zermatt, Switzerland

5 lakes Hike

The 5 lakes hike above Zermatt, Switzerland comes in second for it’s views of the Matterhorn and delicious mountain top restaurants. Why do we not have these hiker rest areas in the US, they are amazing. It was a bit brown given the time of year we were there, I would love to see it in the spring/summer with all the wildflowers! This is a 6.8 mile hike but it’s mostly down hill. Easy enough for our 4 and 6 year old kids.

Emerald Lake – Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Emerald Lake Hike

We love hiking to Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s a bit tricky because the best time to go is in the summer or early fall when everyone else also wants to go. You have to get a special reservation to get to this part of the park and it is hard to come by. That said it is totally worth it. You pass three other alpine lakes before getting to Emerald Lake and the entire hike is gorgeous. It’s only 3.2 miles out and back but I would rate it as moderate difficulty given the altitude and steepness.

Broken Arch Trail- Arches National Park, Utah

Broken Arch Trail

We love visiting Arches National Park in Moab Utah, we are usually at least once a year. It’s hard to pick a favorite hike because they are all spectacular but Broken Arch Trail won out because it has interesting things to see and do all along the trail. Also Sand Arch is along this trail and it’s the kids’ favorite. The trail is an easy 1.7 mile trail and good for almost all ability levels.

Crescent Beach Trail – Cannon Beach, Oregon

Crescent Beach Trail

We LOVE Cannon Beach doing anything on the Oregon Coast is amazing, and you can’t really go wrong hiking any trail here. We choose to go into Ecola State Park because it has beautiful trails, beaches and views of Haystack Rock. This is an easy 3.2 mile out and back hike. You can see the kids are dressed for rain and wind and this was July, Oregon coast weather can be cool even in the summer.

It was SO hard to pick just five, honorable mention goes to:

Tulum Ruins – Tulum, Mexico

Not sure if this counts as a “hike” or just a tour of an historic site, but we walked over 5 miles and loved it so much! A place in Mexico deserved at least a mention here.

Lastly this is not a specific hike as there are many and you can’t go wrong. The “waterfall corridor” in the Colombia river gorge is a dream to hike in.

Please tell me some of your favorite hikes!

We can’t wait to return to some of our favorites and find some new ones in 2023.

New Years Weekend in Colorado Springs

We almost didn’t make it to our new years trip to Colorado Springs and we had to shorten our trip because of a sick pup and a winter storm.

We spent most of New Years Eve at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, I love this little zoo that is tucked into side of the mountain.

The Africa exhibit is so amazing, we have fed the giraffes and the elephants here.

The weather was nice and warm and comfortable.

The kids always love to find places to play along the way.

There is also a really good coffee shop in the zoo, so that made Cory and I very happy. We both got the blackberry latte, it was so good! The lavender latte is also amazing.

After our time at the zoo, we went back to our campsite to play a bit. Emmy and I took Humphry on a little hike.

Cory and I love kombucha, but these two love it even more and stole ours, they crack me up! Around dinner time we grabbed a piazza and drove into Garden of the Gods.

My phone doesn’t take great pictures but it was so light out even with just half a moon. After eating we went out for a night hike and it was so much fun.

Garden of the Gods is a must visit (and free) anytime we are in Colorado Springs.

Dogs are allowed as well to come with you.

Humphry even allowed us to put his puffer jacket on him.

We had planned on watching the fireworks that are launched from Pikes Peak at 9 PM but both places we were told were great viewing options were a bust. It was also cloudy around the peak so we only saw a few fireworks. We had a great time regardless. We had a Champagne toast back at our campsite, a fake new years countdown and in bed by 10 PM.

On new years morning we were excited to go explore the Cave of the Winds.

We have visited before when Cannon was a tiny baby, I think I was also pregnant with Emmy at the time.

We grabbed some much needed Starbucks because we forgot to bring coffee with us and drove up to the caves.

We did the Discovery Adventure Tour with a tour guide and loved it. He did a great job sharing fun stories and interesting information about the cave.

I have a little bit of claustrophobia so I would never be able to do a cave tour that has you crawling on your belly to get though. This tour was fine for me but hearing about how the tours used to be was crazy, 8 hours of squeezing through tiny spaces, hard no from me!

There is also a haunted lantern tour that is dark and spooky, kids have to be at least eight to participate so that might be fun in the future.

The tour was about an hour and the kids did great not running around or touching the caves. This gives me hope that we can do more tours when traveling abroad.

After the caves we went to Red Rocks Open Space for a hike.

We choose a loop that was around three miles, I am not exactly sure how far because my watch died while we were hiking, I forgot to pack my charging cord.

The hike was really interesting, and the kids liked the section with steps into the rocks.

After our hike we had to go back and pack up camp. There was a winter storm coming in overnight into Monday and I didn’t want to be towing home in bad weather. We got home before the snow and in time to make dinner.

We would have loved more time in Colorado Springs as there is always more fun things to do but we had a great time while we were there.

✨ 2023 ✨ Goals

I am so so excited for 2023, which maybe should be concerning because I was super excited thinking 2020 was going to be a great year in January……

It’s been a few years a VERY lackluster running, plagued with injury, pain, disappointment and lots of excuses. Between babies, toddlers and pandemics I really let the athlete side of me slide and it’s something I have really missed. I am determined to get back to working on things for myself this year. It’s not that I couldn’t make time for myself in past years, I just didn’t. I let other things take up my mental and physical energy. But I need to focus on my health, get back to feeling physically strong and capable and back to doing the things I love. It will be better for me and my family.

With that my goals for 2023 are:

Personal goals:

  1. Finish my 10th Marathon
  2. Run a 50 miler
  3. Make room! Everything has a place and everything in it’s place. It is time to declutter.
  4. Join the 4am club – better sleep habits.
  5. Run every day – I would love to complete a full year run streak, but this will be the first one to go if it has to because of injury or family needs.
  6. PT/strength everyday build a solid strength training routine
  7. Make one video a week.
  8. Calm + gentle parenting
  9. Learn about travel hacking
  10. Spend quality time playing with my kids and enjoying them while they are still young.
Signed up and training starts tomorrow!

Anyone want to virtual join a 4/5 am run club?

4 am run club

What are your goals for 2023? I would love to hear about them!

We Really Probably Shouldn’t…But We Did

We started out the day with still lots of snow on the ground and an even sicker dog. So we were sure that our New Years trip was off and that we were staying home.

We were all bummed about missing our trip but came to terms with it and had lots of house projects planned. Our biggest worry was actually that Humphry was sick and that we shouldn’t take him and that he could be really ill. We got some “samples” to the vet and waited to hear back on what to do to help Humphry. We heard back in the afternoon that Humphry just had a bacterial overgrowth that can be easily treaded with antibiotics and were given the green light to take Humphry with us from our vet.

We had accepted that we weren’t going so we weren’t properly preparing for our trip all morning, which meant that we were scrambling to get a very late departure. We packed, picked up Kermit in deep snow and got on the road.

And because we were supposed to be having dinner at our campsite, but left our house around 5 pm We fed our kids Burger King (parents of the year). It’s times like this that we probably should just throw in the towel but we have a hard time giving up an adventure.

We got to our site, which was amazing, after our bedtime and settled in for the night.

Do you ever say yes when you really should just say no?

Snow Day + Changing Plans

We were supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow but ended up getting around 10 inches overnight so we spent our morning digging out.

Luckily it was a bright sunny morning!

It was a heavy wet snow so it stuck to the trees and made everything so beautiful!

Once we got the sidewalk cleaned off we got ready and joined friends at the sledding hill.

Cory took a little time off work to join us in the fun!

We all had a lot of fun then headed home for lunch.

In the afternoon the kids went in the backyard and played in the snow some more because time outside is the best.

We finally got the kids to come in when it started getting dark. We grabbed Greek food because we have been big slackers on getting to the grocery store. Will need to take care of that tomorrow.

We had planned on camping at Cheyenne Mountain State Park this weekend for New Years but given the amount of snow we got and our dog seeming sick we also might be rethinking that plan as well.

Do you have fun plans for New Years?

FOMO + 12 Months of Book Nooks

Another Day another scooter ride in the morning to get our bodies moving.

We scooted down a pretty steep hill to a playground, both kids rocked it. I am so proud of both of them and they really show me how to take on life and learn new things.

Playground break!

We are loving these scooters that the kids got for Christmas! The box says for 8+ but little four year old Emmy is doing great. It probably helps that she mastered her little three wheel scooter when she was two.

We got home and it was snack time! I am trying to get Christmas taken down but it will probably be up into the new year since we are going camping this weekend. Also we are too busy having fun. FOMO!

We went to the library to exchange our Christmas books/movies for snow themed books.

Then we spent two hours with friends at the pool living our best life!

While at the pool it started raining, it always reminds me of home when it rains.

Then it turned it very beautiful snow, looks like we are going sledding tomorrow!

I threw up our January snow themed books, I love these bookshelves so much.

I am so sad I missed

I am so bummed I didn’t take pictures of June (Ocean themed) or July (camping/mountain themed) but I will be sure to do so this year so I have all 12 months documents.
